About the event
We will examine basic administrator functions used to configure GNU Linux on the Raspberry Pi and install open source software on the Raspberry Pi.
The following concepts will be covered in the class:
How to configure the Raspberry Pi's Wireless or Wired network interface.
How to install open source software packages using the GUI interface or command line interface (apt-get).
How to download/pull open source projects from GitHub.
How to compile source code/projects obtained from GitHub.
Examples will be presented include setting up a Raspberry Pi, downloading a 'Smart Mirror' project, installing the software needed to configure/compile the 'Smart Mirror' project, and finally compiling the 'Smart Mirror' software.
The class will be broken up into two components. The first component will be the class presentation covering the material described above. The second component of the class will be a hands-on lab in which participants can bring their own Raspberry Pi setup and receive help installing open source software and projects.
While a significant amount of information will be presented in the class, a list of online resources will be provided to help eliminate the need to memorize everything presented in the class.
